Overview

Kali Audio’s debut LP-6 (Gen 1) studio monitors are designed to give you world-class power and accuracy without breaking the bank. Since their launch in 2018, the LP-6 studio monitors have been gathering praise from audio professionals and audio enthusiasts alike. These budget friendly speakers quickly became best sellers in the industry and many consider them to be the best 2-way studio monitors in their price range.

The LP-6 studio monitors are designed to let you hear every detail happening in your mix. By providing exceptionally accurate frequency response, whatever is present in your mix is what you’ll hear. Nothing is boosted or suppressed to cover flaws or try to sound more pleasing. With the LP-6’s, you can mix with more confidence, and you can also be assured that your mix will translate as best as possible to whatever systems your audience is using.

Verified Accuracy

It’s been argued that the single most important aspect of a studio monitor speaker is accuracy of sound reproduction. Kali Audio’s LP-6 speakers were designed to excel in this regard. In order to process and output exceptionally accurate audio compositions, the LP-6 feature best-in-class frequency response, dispersion and distortion characteristics. To verify such lofty claims, Kali Audio LP-6 monitors were independently tested by Pro Sound Testing – a third-party amplifier and loudspeaker testing lab. Pro Sound Testing results show that the LP-6’s have the lowest distortion in their class – a full 6dB lower than its nearest competitor! This is achieved via design considerations that optimize woofer performance. The end result is super-accurate low-end response and impressive low-frequency extension. Basically, the Kali Audio LP-6 studio monitors allow you to be precise when mixing and give you confidence that what you hear coming from the LP-6’s will accurately and consistently translate across all systems and produce audio exactly as you had intended.

Power & Listening Distance

Kali Audio’s engineers define listening distance as a distance range at which the speakers can continuously play at 85 dB while maintaining 20 dB dynamic headroom. Meaning that within this distance range, you can listen for long periods of time at reference volume, and momentary peaks such as bass drops or loud effects will come through clearly and with minimal distortion. The LP-6 has a recommended listening distance of 0.5 – 2.5 Meters (1.6 ft – 8.2 ft) and enough output for most 1-2 person setups. Bass on the LP-6 studio monitors is delivered via larger magnets and larger voice coils than any comparable speakers on the market! This gives you a more accurate bass response that extends lower, so you can dial-in the exact low-end sound you need. Bass response is not boosted or overhyped, instead it is represented accurately and precisely on each track. The integrated Class D Power amp delivers clean, reliable power that’s optimized specifically for these speakers. Each LP-6 speaker provides 40 Watts via the 1-inch soft dome tweeter and 40 Watts via the 6.5-inch woofer – for a total power of 80 Watts per speaker. Therefore a pair of Kali’s LP-6 studio monitors provide a total of 160 Watts!

Easy Boundary EQ

Boundary EQ Controls – A speaker’s given position in a space can drastically change it’s frequency response. Speakers placed against a wall or on a desk will sound very different than speakers placed on a stand, even in a well-treated space. Hard surfaces like walls, desk tops, and recording consoles can change the low end frequency response of the monitor and degrade the overall clarity. Luckily, most of the common positions are fairly predictable and easily corrected. Kali’s team did their Boundary EQ tuning at The Village Studios in Los Angeles, and came up with boundary compensation EQ settings to help you get the optimum sound in relation to your speaker placement. The boundary EQ controls are located on the back of LP-6 speakers and clearly marked for each configuration. Combined with the LF and HF trims, this will ensure that the speakers sound their best no matter what room you’re mixing in, or where the speakers are placed.

Easy Connections – Kali Audio’s LP-6 studio monitors feature balanced XLR and TRS inputs, and an unbalanced RCA input. The RCA input can be set to -10 dBu sensitivity when you’re using consumer devices like a laptop or smartphone’s headphone jack.

Waveguide & Port Tube

3-D Imaging Waveguide – The waveguide on the LP-6 studio monitors ensures that the directivity of the loudspeaker is smooth throughout its frequency response. What’s more: it’s calibrated so that the sound power of the loudspeaker helps you to perceive sound accurately. In practical terms, what this means is that you’re hearing spatial details in the recording that allow your brain to place elements of the recording in the space around you. This gives the speakers a more natural, lifelike feel that exposes more of the detail of the material that you’re working on. This level of detail makes it easier to make critical decisions, as well as making these monitors pleasurable to mix on and listen to in general.

Low Noise Port Tube – Kali Audio’s engineers wanted to put a port on the front of the LP-6 studio monitors so that they could be used in small spaces where they’d be placed against walls. At the same time, Kali’s engineers did not want noise from the front port to distract from the accuracy of the speaker, so they developed a special front port tube that doesn’t make noise. On most port tubes, air leaves at different speeds from different points of the opening, creating noisy turbulence. This turbulence can be heard as “chuffing,” or an audible air sound coming from the monitor. This sound will add to the noise floor and obscure the details of the low end. The port tube on LP-6 was designed to ensure that all of the air leaves the port tube at the same velocity. This helps add to the low end response of the speaker, while keeping the bass clean, tight, and devoid of extra noise.

Standard port tube: air leaves at different speeds from different points of the opening, creating noisy turbulence.
Kali Audio LP-6 port tube: air leaves the port tube at the same velocity, helping add to the low end response of the speaker, while keeping the bass clean, tight, and devoid of extra noise.
